präsentiert sich die Tiroler Life Sciences- und
Medizintechnik-Szene. Die Branche ist innova-
tionsstark, nur geringfügigen konjunkturellen
Schwankungen unterworfen und trägt durch ihre
Hochtechnologieprodukte zu einer hohen Wert-
schöpfungsquote bei. Unternehmen, Hochschu-
len und F&E-Einrichtungen profitieren in Tirol
von den kurzen Wegen am Standort, besonders
rund um die Universitätskliniken im Innsbrucker
Zentralraum, von maßgeschneiderten Landes-
förderungen und dem raschen Technologietrans-
fer, der die Verbundforschung von Wirtschaft
und Wissenschaft zusätzlich begünstigt. Drei
Universitäten und zwei Fachhochschulen leisten
exzellente Forschung internationalen Rufs. Und
eine innovationsstarke Industrie beheimatet
gleich eine ganze Reihe von Weltmarktführern.
Die lange Tradition von Forschung und Pharma-
industrie am Standort ist ein Grund für diesen
Erfolg. Darüber hinaus haben gezielte Investitio-
nen in angewandte, kooperative Forschung und
die konsequente Vernetzung von Industrie- und
Wissenschaftspartnern zur Stärke der Medizin-
technik in Tirol beigetragen.
Als High-Tech-Branche ist die Medizintechnik auf
bestens ausgebildete Fachkräfte angewiesen –
auch hier bietet Tirol der Medizintechnik einen
Standortvorteil: Die UMIT, die Private Univer-
sität für Gesundheitswissenschaften, Medizini-
sche Informatik und Technik in Hall, bietet seit
2012 als einzige Ausbildungsstätte in Westös-
terreich im Mechatronik-Doktoratsstudium die
Vertiefungsrichtung Biomedizinische Technik
an. Zudem profitieren Wirtschaft und Wissen-
schaft in Tirol von aktiven Clusternetzwerken,
in denen Unternehmen, F&E-Einrichtungen
und Hochschulen branchen- und disziplinüber-
greifend Synergien nutzen, um mit gestärkter
Thriving. Fast-growing. Future-oriented. That
describes the Tyrolean life sciences and medical
technology sector. The field is highly innovative,
subject to only negligible economic fluctuations
and, with its high-technology products, it con-
tributes to a high value-added ratio. Companies,
universities and R&D establishments in Tyrol
profit from the short channels within the region,
in particular those between the university clinic
departments in the central Innsbruck area,
from tailored funding provided by provincial
government and from fast technology transfer,
which is promoted by the collaboration between
science and business research. Outstanding,
internationally-acclaimed research is carried
out by three academic universities and two
universities of applied sciences. And a highly
innovative industry is home to a whole range of
world market leaders. One of the reasons behind
this success is the long tradition of research
and pharmaceutical manufacturing here in the
region. In addition targeted investments in
applied, collaborative research and the con-
sistent networking of partners in industry and
science have contributed to the strength of the
medical technology sector in Tyrol.
The medical technology sector is a high-tech
field that is reliant on qualified, expert person-
nel, and here too Tyrol offers a locational advan-
tage for medical technology enterprises. Since
autumn 2012, the UMIT Private University of
Health Sciences, Medical Informatics and Tech-
nology in Hall in Tirol has, as the only institute
in the west of Austria, been offering Biomedical
Technology as an area of specialisation within
its Mechatronics PhD programme. In addition,
industry and science in Tyrol both profit from
active cluster networks which enable compa-
nies, R&D facilities and universities to exploit
